I live with my wife in Massachusetts where I was diagnosed with cancer in 2008. Because of the experience of Dr. Lawrence Einhorn in dealing with my type of cancer, I moved back temporarily with my parents in Indiana to receive my chemotherapy treatment at Indiana University. There is nothing pleasant about having to go to any hospital for chemotherapy treatment except for the kind doctors and nurses . Your world is turned upside down, and most everything about the whole experience is dark and depressing. Amid my anxiety, during one of my many visits to IU for chemotherapy, I met the Gianfagnas, and was acquainted with Creating Hope. I have always enjoyed art, pencil drawing, and even painting with oils, but got away from it a while ago for different reasons. Naturally, I was interested in what the Gianfagnas were doing. It was a very pleasant surprise to receive such a nice kit from them, and an even greater surprise when they showed me how easy it was to make a beautiful bookmark. Oil painting is very tedious, and involves a lot of bad smells, setup, and cleaning, I guess part of the reason I stopped painting. Creating hope gave me the tools necessary and showed me how to create beautiful art in any location without all the mess and setup. It gave me something to smile about and even look forward to on my infusion days. I am now considered a cancer survivor, and since then I've finished a portrait of my great grandmother, and a water color painting of a horse. I have been very weak after the chemotherapy and for the most part have felt pretty useless and unproductive, but finishing two art projects has given me a sense of accomplishment, and it's been gratifying to see people enjoy my art once again. A great big thanks to such a wonderful couple, the Gianfagnas, for helping me find something I had lost while I felt I was losing everything. Mark Thompson
